Platinum vs White Gold - Choosing the right metal for you

I get asked weekly to explain the difference between the two popular white metal options - Platinum and White Gold. It can be a tricky question to answer succinctly.

Both platinum and 18ct white gold are beautiful precious metals, suitable for everyday wear — but they behave differently over time. The best choice for YOU depends on how the ring will be worn, the stones it holds, and what longevity means to you.

Check out the comparison table below, and our reccomendations for each precious metal

A handy comparison table for the properties of Platinum 950 and 18ct White Gold, to help you choose the right metal for your ring

✨ When We Recommend Platinum 950

Platinum is naturally white, highly durable, and ideal for rings designed to last generations.

We often recommend platinum for:

  • It’s naturally bright white colour

  • Fine claws or delicate settings

  • Security of high-value or sentimental stones

  • Heirloom remakes and generational jewellery

  • Clients seeking low-maintenance, long-term wear

  • Folks with very sensitive skin. Platinum is hypoallergenic.

Platinum doesn’t lose metal as it wears — instead it shifts, and develops a soft patina that can be polished back if desired. It requires no plating and remains white for life. It can lose it’s shiny polished finish quicker than white gold.

✨ When We Recommend 18ct White Gold

18ct white gold offers a brighter, high-contrast white finish (when plated) and greater flexibility for intricate designs.

We often recommend 18ct white gold for:

  • Highly detailed or engraved designs

  • Bold or wide bands where weight matters

  • Clients who love a bright, mirror-white finish and to make their diamonds *pop*

White gold is naturally a warm grey, so is often rhodium-plated to achieve a white colour and will require re-plating over time — something we factor into long-term care conversations. The natural warm grey of 18ct White Gold, is beautiful in it’s own right however, and often suits more contemporary jewellery designs.

Platinum is a divisive metal between Jewellers! If a jeweller isn't experienced in working with it, or they cast their designs, they may prefer (and price accordingly) for you to choose white gold instead.

At Eli Speaks, we hand-forge all of our precious metals. This process naturally work-hardens the metal, which is important to enhance it’s strength and durability — and we particularly love working with platinum.
Both platinum and 18ct white gold are excellent options for us to create with, and if a design is influenced by the properties of the metal, we assess this on a case-by-case basis. We’ll always guide you toward the choice that best supports your design, stones, and how you’ll wear the piece.

There’s no “better” metal — only the right metal for your story, lifestyle, and stones. We guide every client through this decision so your jewellery is as practical as it is meaningful.

***Please note that 9ct White Gold is not discussed here, as it has different properties. Don’t make the mistake of assuming 9ct white gold will be as suitable for daily wear.
